Teenage Engineering PO-12 Pocket Operator: Review

Teenage Engineering PO-12

The Teenage Engineering PO-12 is a drum synthesizer.

Unlike other drum synthesizers, this one is pocket-sized.

You can use it to make music with your thumbs.

It comes with a screen.

All the sensitive components are arranged just beneath, giving the device a unique look.

Teenage Engineering PO-12

You’ve got the solid drum sounds, killer effects, and intuitive sequencing in theTeenage Engineering’s Pocket Operator PO-12 rhythm machine. Onboard this streamlined PC board, you’ll find access to 16 tweakable drum sounds, a 16-step sequencer with 16 chainable patterns, and 16 effects you can use to sweeten things up. Components such as a Silicon Labs EFM32 Gecko MCU, a Cirrus Logic DAC, and a Knowles speaker deliver high-quality sound that even raise once-skeptical eyebrows.

Besides the built-in speaker and alarm clock, this drum synthesizers boasts features such as:

1). LCD Display

2). 16 punch-in effects

3). Sample drum sounds

4). 16 patterns

5). Real synthesized drums

6). Auto compressor

7). 16 pattern chaining

8). Break off hanger

9). Foldable Stand

You have the option of syncing with devices like phones, computers and the like, not to mention other pocket operators.

This is on top of syncing the input/audio through various devices.

The Teenage Engineering PO-12 is designed to fit in your palm.

It is that small.

You will observe 23 buttons and a pair of pots, not to mention a monochrome screen and a precariously integrated display hanger attachment.

But this device’s biggest draw is the fact that it doesn’t have a case.

From the outside, you can clearly see the circuit board upon which the synthesizer’s components have been mounted.

You can use the device exactly as it is.

But you also have the option of buying a case.

The display, which is at the center, will change the visuals it shows depending on the buttons pressed.

The display with its animated visual elements supports the idea that this synthesizer was designed to deliver fun rather than extensive functionality.

Some people have also commended Teenage Engineering for selling a synthesizer without a case and then forcing the people who want a case to buy one.

This only serves to fill their pockets even further.

This device is going to give you 16 original sounds that include Hihat, Clap, and Kick.

The price tag should have warned you to not expect separated output. You should also expect a mono signal.

The sequencer provided is very easy to use.

You can produce more complex tracks using the chain patterns.

The parameter locking provided alongside the 16 effects (which you can tweak in real-time) empower you to write effects into your tracks.

While you can sync the P012 to other pocket devices, the output level deteriorates with each drum synthesizer you connect.

1). This device is affordable. Even if you choose to buy the case, the P012 is still affordable.

2). The display has animated visuals that make using the device so much more fun.

3). You can sync the device to ipads, iphones, computers and even other pocket operators.

4). The device is easy to use.

5). It features a cool, unique design.

1). The screen is fragile

2). The case is silicone

The Teenage Engineering P0-12 is mostly okay.

The screen isn’t as helpful as some people would like. And some of the functions require quite a bit of patience.

But, overall, this is a clever little synthesizer with a fun design, a friendly price tag, real synthesized and sampled drums and even an alarm clock.

You more or less get what you pay for.
